Zuiganji Temple

Zuiganji is said to have been founded in the early 9th century as a Tendai Buddhist temple. The buildings that stand today were completed under Date Masamune, and his refined aesthetic can be seen throughout—from the ornate sliding door paintings to the intricate decorative details.
The Hondō (Main Hall) and the Kuri (the temple kitchen) are designated National Treasures as valuable examples of Momoyama-period art. The Onarimon (Onari Gate), Chūmon (Middle Gate), and Taikobei (Taiko Wall) are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. In front of the Main Hall stand the “Garyūbai,” a pair of red and white plum trees said to have been planted by Masamune himself. They typically reach full bloom from late March to early April.
