Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine
Shiogama Shrine has long been revered as one of the most important shrines in northeastern Japan and as the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Mutsu Province. Originally only Shiogama Shrine stood here, but during the Meiji period, Shiwahiko Shrine was incorporated into the grounds and the complex is now known collectively as Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine.
Situated atop a small hill, the lush shrine grounds offer views overlooking the town of Shiogama and the sea. In addition to its impressive shrine buildings, the grounds feature a grove of 27 Shiogama-zakura cherry trees designated as a Natural Monument, as well as the Shiogama Shrine Museum, which displays treasures, arms, and armor, paintings, and traditional crafts—allowing visitors to experience the site’s deep history and enduring culture.
