Sumaru Yashiki
Located in the center of town, Sumaru Yashiki was the residence of the Watanabe family, prosperous merchants who ran a paper wholesaling business. Built from the mid-Meiji to Taishō periods, the earthen-walled storehouse and main residence now host seasonal exhibitions and events where visitors can experience the cultural heritage of this historic castle town. Among the exhibits, the vibrant displays of "Shiroishi washi" (Japanese paper)—once in decline but revived through local efforts—are particularly striking. Workshops for making "Shiroishi washi akari" (paper lanterns) and fans are also offered. Just a short distance from Shiroishi Castle, visitors can drop in casually and enjoy meaningful encounters with local residents.
